FOND DU LAC COUNTY (WFRV) -- More than 19 years after Berit Beck was found murdered in Fond du Lac County, her parents and investigators hope advances in DNA technology and tips could lead to her killer.
"I think there are a few people out there who know exactly what happened with Berit and it would be great if they would share that information with us. I think it's about time,” said Berit’s mother, Diane Beck. On July 17, 1990, 18-year old Berit left her home in Sturtevant for a computer training seminar in Appleton. She drove north on Highway 41 and exited on Johnson St. in Fond du Lac. A Walgreen’s receipt found in her van showed she bought a few things at around 11:00 a.m.
Several hours later, her mother received several phone calls reporting her daughter hadn’t arrived at the seminar.
“As far as driving any distance alone, that was her first time…I really wasn't thinking that anything terrible had happened at that point,” Beck said.
Thinking that her daughter had been overlooked at the training, she remained calm until later in the evening when there was still no sign of Berit. She and her husband Dave reported their daughter missing. “I think of it as a random act. Just an unfortunate situation that she got in the middle of and nothing much she could do about it,” Dave Beck said.
Hundreds of volunteers combed the route Berry Beck would have driven from Sturtevant to Fond du Lac searching for her and the family’s van. A state worked spotted the van in a K-Mart parking lot in Fond du Lac on July 19, 1990. All of Berit’s belongings were inside. The van’s odometer had 462 extra miles on it. “It progressed from her missing to still hopeful of finding her . Then we found the van didn't find her, and it got worse and worse,” Dave Beck said.
Nearly six weeks after she was reported missing, a farmer discovered Berit Beck’s body in a weedy ditch off Brown Rd. in the town of Waupun. She was fully clothed and her body badly decomposed. "We don't have anything at this point in time to believe that she was acquainted with the killer,” Lt. Bill Flood of the Fond du Lac Co. Sheriff’s Office said. Flood was a detective in 1990 and worked the case. He said the department exhausted all of its leads and the trail eventually went cold.
In 1991, court records show hair samples and fingerprints were taken from Craig Hron, a West Bend man convicted of robbing a bank a day after Beck’s van was found. To date, no one has been charged. Thomas Fassbender, who is working the case for the Department of Criminal Investigation, told Channel 5 that "There are persons of interest in this investigation. And by persons of interest, I mean persons of interest that could be suspects and also persons of interest that could be persons who know something."
Beck’s family told Channel 5 evidence recovered from the van could lead to their daughter’s killer or an accomplice. They’re pleading for anyone with information to come forward. "There's kind of a saying that bad conscience has a good memory, and I'm sure that they're constantly reminded of this bad thing that happened… they need to ‘fess up and say I have some information that I've been holding for quite a while and I think I need to get it off my chest.” A reward may be available for information leading to Beck’s killer. Anyone with information can call the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office 920.906.4777 or the Department of Criminal Investigation 920.832.2750.
