GREEN BAY (WFRV) --  Green Bay police are searching for a suspect after a man was shot Thursday afternoon on the city’s east side.

It happened just before 2:40 p.m. on the 1300 block of Crooks Street.

The victim told police he was approached by a man outside his apartment, and asked if he knew a person who lived in the neighborhood.

The victim told him he did not know the person, and was shot at least once in the lower abdomen or upper leg.  Police say up to three shots were fired.

“It appears entirely random at this time, and that is troubling,” said Lt. John Balza with the Green Bay Police Department.

The victim was able to crawl into his apartment and call 911.

Police on the scene immediately placed nearby Washington Middle School and East High School on lockdown.  The middle school students were allowed to leave at 3:15 p.m., under the close watch of police.  East High School students left at 3:30 p.m.

“I just saw all the cops outside, standing around with guns,” said Charles Wilson, the parent of a Washington Middle School student.  “I didn’t know what was going on.”

Police have used canine units to search for the suspect, and conducted door-to-door searches.

They say one possible lead is the person the victim claims the suspect was looking for.  However police only have the person’s first name, and say it is common.

“There’s at least one party in the area that it could be, but that party doesn’t live in the house, he just lived nearby,” said Lt. Balza.

Neighbors say they’re rattled by the daytime shooting.

“I’m feeling scared,” said David Estupinan, who lives near the scene of the shooting.  “Right in my neighborhood.  Right next to my house.”

The suspect is described as a white male with an athletic build.  He’s in his early twenties, with dark hair, and was wearing a light hooded sweatshirt.  Anyone with information is asked to call Green Bay Police at 920-448-3200.
